The country’s official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Holland actually consists of only the two provinces North Holland and South Holland. Nevertheless, the term Holland is often used when referring to the Netherlands.
Landscape in the Netherlands

What is typically Dutch?

Immediately, cheese, tulips, canals, Rembrandt, clogs, dikes, and windmills come to mind. But also Amsterdam with its many bicycles and colorful houses.

Let’s start with the tulips.

Tulips in the Netherlands

Every year, the flowers attract thousands of visitors from all over the world to the country. The Netherlands has more tulip fields than anywhere else in the world. This makes Holland a huge flower shop, and during blooming season, the cities also become colorful. The whole country then shines in red, pink, or yellow.

In Amsterdam, there is even the Keukenhof Tulip Museum or the Flower Parade, which are definitely worth a visit.

The Dutch and the history of clogs.

Today, the Dutch certainly no longer wear clogs, but the “Klompen,” as they are called in Dutch, are as much a part of Holland’s romantic image as its windmills. In fact, a few farmers and farm workers still wear clogs. They keep feet dry, are safe, and are said to offer health-promoting comfort.

The Cheese!

Besides flowers, cheese is Holland’s second-largest export. This is not surprising, as you too will know Edam, Leerdammer, or Gouda from supermarket shelves. A trip to Alkmaar, Edam, or Gouda to explore their cheese markets is worthwhile! Here, cheese is sold as it was in the Middle Ages.

They are simply part of Holland’s landscape: windmills.

With more than a thousand windmills, you are sure to get one in front of your lens as soon as you take a trip out of the cities. The Kinderdijk windmills are a UNESCO site, where 19 windmills stand alone.

Visiting a mill on National Windmill Day is a special experience. Every second Saturday in May, most wind and water mills open to visitors.

Landscape in the Netherlands

Cycling is not only environmentally friendly and healthy, but in Holland, it’s a very special experience!

Since Holland is very flat, even inexperienced cyclists can start without hesitation. In addition, Holland is a cycling country, so cyclists are given special consideration in traffic. With a cycling route network of over 30,000 kilometers that is very well signposted, every cyclist will find the right tour for them.
