Hamburg – What makes this city in northern Germany so unique?

The city’s connection via the Elbe to the North Sea made Hamburg one of the most important port cities in the world. But Hamburg has far more to offer than its harbor: from the famous Reeperbahn, to the Elbphilharmonie completed in 2016, to entertaining auctions at the fish market, there’s plenty going on! So what can you expect when you’re exploring northern Germany?

Moin instead of Hallo

Well, above all, in Hamburg, you are often greeted not with “Hallo,” “Hi,” or “Grüß Gott,” but with a concise “Moin.” This greeting can certainly be interpreted as heartfelt and used at any time of day, which often causes confusion for visitors. Contrary to what most people assume, the word has nothing to do with the early time of day, but is a warm greeting.

A Very Special Mentality

Hamburgers are very open-minded people. No fuss is too much here; they look forward to new things and let everyone be who they are. Nevertheless, North Germans are generally considered reserved and quiet. This is primarily due to their mentality: they tend to prioritize composure! Yet, in Hamburg, the nights are long, the cultural offerings are vast, and the willingness to chat comes naturally.
